In Nairobi, Kenya, little John Thuo is one of the many homeless youths living on the streets. They’re often referred to as street urchins and looked down upon. Viewed as dirty beggars and pick-pockets. John proved that even a homeless street urchin has a heart.
While on the streets begging for money, John met a woman named Gladys Kamande. Gladys suffered from many physical ailments including collapsed lungs causing shortness of breath, for which she relies on an oxygen concentrator, oxygen cylinders, and a generator to breathe. At 32 years old, she has gone through multiple surgeries including, one surgery that ruptured her optical nerve causing her to go blind.
John, being a curious young man, asked her what the gadgets were for. When Gladys explained her situation, his eyes welled with tears and he began to cry. He knew living on the street was difficult, but Gladys had it so much worse than him.
Gladys took John’s hand and they both prayed that God would provide for both of them. He then reached into his pocket and gave her all the money he had.
When a passerby saw the little boys overwhelming emotion, he took the above photo and shared the story on social media.
Since the story went viral on a Kenyan fundraising site, generous strangers have raised over 3 million shillings for Gladys in just 4 days. The funds will cover nearly half of the 7 million shillings she needs for her treatment in India.
But that’s not all…
Gladys has taken John off the street, and trying to get him back in school. He now considers Gladys his new mother.
