In San Jose, there is a famous house that is more than just a tourist attraction. The Winchester House is a testament to one woman’s attempt to atone for her family. Sarah Winchester was a woman synonymous with heartbreak. Her early life was pleasant enough, but as she got married and embarked on her own life with her husband, things started to go wrong. She married into a family with a curse on their name.
The first tragedy to befall her was the loss of her newborn daughter to a rare disease.
This was the tragedy that sent Sarah Winchester into a deep depression.
Things were made much worse when her husband succumbed to Tuberculosis.
Inconsolable, Sarah turned to a psychic medium, who reported that these losses were caused by a curse on the Winchester family.
Because so many had died because of the family’s business, the spirits were seeking revenge.
The spirits would soon come for Sarah, too. But the medium had a plan.
Per the medium’s instructions, Sarah sold everything and moved to San Diego, where it was said her husband would help guide her.
The house was not just for Sarah, but for all the ghosts of those who fell to her family’s rifles. Since they continued to do so, the house had to be under constant construction. New rooms were always being added. The final total was 160.
Fearing that if she ever stopped building she would die, Sarah Winchester had carpenters building one section of the house while simultaneously tearing down another.
There are stairways that lead nowhere, doors that open to nothing, and no definitive blueprints.
Sarah lived to the grand old age of 83, pretty good for that era. Maybe all this really worked.
When she finally passed, those inheriting her estate found that most of her fortune was gone, having been put into this lavish and confusing palace of the dead.
The home is now open to tourists but is still said to be very, very haunted. Take care when visiting.
