Tracey McMenamy is a dog lover and foster parent for the rescue organization Operation Paws for Homes. McMenamy is also the wife of a police officer who has been in the department for 12 years. Though she loves her husband, she does have one fear: that one day he may not come home. This year 16 cops have been killed in the line of duty.
“As a wife, it’s scary for me that we’ve lost that many police officers,” McMenamy said.
So when her rescue dog gave birth to a litter of 10 puppies she decided to do something a little bit special. She named each and every one of them after a fallen officer. The only trouble was there were more fallen officers than puppies. But what’s most important is that her small gesture is helping the families of these officers heal. After her story was shared, the puppy Leotta named after Officer Noah Leotta who was killed by a drunk driver, was adopted by Leotta’s family. Then Officer Guidon’s aunt decided to adopt the puppy named after her niece. Later on, Officer Colson’s family decided to adopt the dog named after their son. We can only imagine that the other seven puppies will find homes just as loving.
